Meet Trudy's team

“An excellent competition lawyer is prepared and able to make a difficult judgement call on a complex area of law which affects the commercial strategy of the client”

Trudy has almost 30 years of specialist experience advising on all aspects of competition law.  She advises across a wide range of industry sectors, including the motor industry, pharmaceuticals, IP and other regulated sectors.

Often working with international corporates, achieving her client’s commercial aims is the most rewarding part of the job for Trudy and she describes her approach to client work as commercial and pragmatic. Her detailed understanding of competition law is underpinned by three decades of practical experience, covering a broad range of industries.

At the heart of what an organisation does

“It’s a very strategic role – competition goes to the heart of what an organisation does and how it does it, impacting the perceptions of customers and investors as well as other market operators. Knowledge of the rules is taken as given – it is the experience and judgement of the competition advisor on which the client will rely”.

It helps, she says, to have also sat “on each side of the fence” in private practice, within competition authorities (secondments to the EC and to the UK’s competition authority) and in house (with secondments to Volkswagen UK and Lloyd’s Banking Group).

Collaboration and understanding

When advising on competition law, it is important to get to grips with the relevant industry or sector, understanding the client’s routes to markets and competition dynamics in those markets. Respected by clients for her “legal expertise and awareness of wider policy issues”, Trudy rolls up her shirt sleeves and works collaboratively with the client in order to understand their market, commercial drivers and goals.

This way of working clearly pays off, with clients noting that Trudy is “very commercial and knowledgeable” and “her knowledge of this complex area of law is excellent and we feel that we can rely upon her for robust and accurate advice”.

Trudy is keen to point out that “we are flexible, tailoring our services to what the client needs and to what is sensible for the client to pay for”.

As well as being ranked in the Hall of Fame by Legal 500 and as a Leading Individual (Tier 1) by Chambers, Trudy is also independently rated as a ‘stand out lawyer’ by Acritas Stars.

Trudy recently undertook a three-year appointment as a Non-Executive Director in the NHS, sitting on the Board of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
